PROFESSTIONALISM IN THE GAMBIA FILM INDUSTRY
What is professionalism?
As the word implies Professionalism is people having confidence in you the Artist. Let's face it; it is a major role you're playing. Everything is reliant on you turning up on time, mastering your lines, understanding your role and bringing all the equipment that's needed for the job. There's a lot of trust and expectation.
It also entails being totally focused and in check with yourself so it leaves no room for doubt or indiscrepancy. Knowing exactly what you're going into at all times. Everything is checked off and prepared the night before and leading up to the production so that no stone is left unturned. You're prepared and you're present. Your total focus is on that particular job.
Talking about the movie production and market in Gambia, one have to consider the fact that we have good stories to shot, the cast has to be good for the movie to be able to sell well. If standards are raised, not only will Gambian films be appreciated as quality films from The Gambia, it will open doors of opportunities for stakeholders at the international market. Most producers rush to locations and studios only to come out with substandard films and standards should not be compromise.
It's embarrassing the manner in which movies are shot, using wrong costume, wrong cast and wrong location.
It’s no doubt that most producers are still encountering problems accessing funds. This, places serious limitations to what producers could achieve thus, affects their output.
We all know critics are always watching, looking for an opportunity to crucify not only the Producers but also the Actors/Actresses. We can only put them to shame when we have standard films in the market and stop casting actors/actresses based on personal relations.
There is a brighter future for this industry as we are having a generation of real film makers, though less opportune. There's a future. There's the need for lectures, workshop and seminars with renowned professionals both external and internal to enhance efficiency.
In addition, the presence of external experts will raise the professionalism in film production and helps counteract the shortage of qualified technicians and artists in the film industry in The Gambia. “There might be some difficulties in cooperation with external directors because their creativeness exceeds Gambia’s film-making conditions or can be alienating to Gambian culture.”
We should have a Censors Board in place that will work closely/have a cordial relationship with Filmmakers, knowing their constraints and also protect them by fighting Piracy which is killing the industry that Artistes have worked hard for.
If things are not changed it will drive filmmakers to produce their films from the international market and then bring them into our local market.
GRTS can serve as an avenue for producers to showcase their work. Producers can collaborate with them to look for sponsors for their films.
The Way forward for the improvement of the Movie Industry in The Gambia is by:-
• Filmmakers should endeavour to work as a team for the progress of the Movie Industry.
• External partners/film makers can be invited to get involve, using good cast and providing modern equipment.
• Producing quality and standard films should be the bedrock of any film maker as this will attract Public and Private Enterprises to put in their money.
• The Government should establish a Censors Board that will help stop piracy.
• Refresher trainings should be organised periodically to enhance the efficiency and progress of the industry.

GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE
A Science student Isatou is the first child of her parents. She is beautiful and intelligent in her academics. So when Alieu, a man she met for two weeks confessed his love to her and with her parents consent accepted, little did she know that her career was about to be sha4tered. Isatou is determined to make the relationship work, but it seems Alieu hasn’t been entirely honest about his ambition. Tourism is a lucrative business for a nation as it boosts its economy but it also brings pains and suffering to the average girl child. Sex Tourism is getting more rampant. Young girls and boys are being abused by pedophiles all because of poverty. They engaged themselves into Prostitution. The fact that these young girls are engaged in prostitution is not sometimes seen as Exploitation but ‘Opportunity’ by their parents. Queen comes from a poor family background. She is an orphan, finds her way to prostitution, went through disappointments and then ventured into an indecent and unlawful business. Read to find out.

He managed to secure this job so as to make ends meet and his ambition was to hook himself up with an Old White Lady to help him change the life of his family. Isatou is a young and intelligent student of Grade 11 at the Gambia Senior Secondary School. Alieu started showering gifts on Isatou and her parents, infect he offered to sponsor Isatou’s schooling. Isatou’s parents being average Gambian earners welcome his offer. Her love for Alieu was becoming very strong and they go out once every weekend to the beach, for lunch and dinner. He spoiled her so much that she never thought of living her life without him. Alieu Hired a Taxi to be picking her up from school. Her friends will be complimenting her of being lucky of meeting a nice caring man.
